Now in its 35th year, the Dulux Colour Awards are a magnet for some of the most illuminating and boundary-pushing projects in residential and commercial design. The program rewards architects, designers and students in Australia and New Zealand with cash prizes for work that continues to celebrate the sophisticated and masterful use of colour.
“It is evident that architects and designers are increasingly using colour as an integral design tool to provide a space meaning in both its functional and environmental contexts,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour planning and communications manager at Dulux.
Building upon the program’s colourful foundations, the 2021 call-out for entries, which is happening now, is once again expected to attract spectacular submissions from eligible participants until its closing date on May 24. “Dulux is eager to see their creative employment of colour across a vast breadth of architectural genres with this year’s submissions,” Andrea says.

As with previous years, leading experts from Australia and New Zealand’s architecture and interior design industries will form the judging panel for the 2021 edition of the Dulux Colour Awards.
This year’s lineup of judges includes Jefa Greenaway, director of Greenaway Architects; Melissa Bright, director of Studio Bright; Patrick Loo, director of Common Space; Sarah-Jane Pyke, co-founding director of Arent & Pyke; and Suzannah Waldron, director of Searle x Waldron Architecture.
Judge Melissa Bright, who received a commendation in the 2020 Dulux Colour Awards for her studio’s Ruckers Hill House project, says she is particularly looking out for the ways in which designers harness colour to support a project’s bigger idea, where it’s seamlessly integrated rather than being used as a “feature” or layer of decoration. “The Dulux Colour Awards are a fantastic way to connect with the larger community and promote good design,” she adds.
