The culmination of a year’s worth of exceptional innovation, research and development, B20 unveiled over 100 new products during its digital broadcast on Thursday evening. The screening was the first of its kind to come from market-leading building products company Brickworks and is now available for catch-up viewing.

During a year when online streaming rapidly became the new – and only – way for brands to connect with audiences, B20 by Brickworks shone the spotlight on inspiring new collections from the company’s immense portfolio of bricks, concrete, masonry and roof tiles.

Perched high on a cliffside plot in Bowen Hills, a suburb just north of Brisbane’s CBD, La Scala is the private residence of Ingrid Richards and Adrian Spence of Richards and Spence. Drawing upon four years of collected ideas, the architects desired to create a house where the outside space acted solidly as its centrepiece. The resulting dwelling – a section of which was resolved by Ingrid with a sketch on a napkin while on holidays – evokes snapshots of the Mediterranean and Central and South America. Its bare masonry standing out under Queensland’s famed blue skies.

In Los Angeles, locals describe the Santa Monica neighbourhood as Silicon Beach, the surfside equivalent of Silicon Valley, due to the concentration of technology, entertainment and digital media companies that have established offices just a few blocks from the ocean. Among the liveliness, the Santa Monica Proper hotel has become a smash-hit since opening mid-2019, winning the hearts of visitors and locals alike. Nestled within a six-storey Spanish Colonial Revival-style building originally designed by Arthur E. Harvey in 1928 and renovated by Howard Laks Architects, the light-filled interiors of the hotel were created by famed American designer Kelly Wearstler.

Hailing from Georgia in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, the Mama Manana group of restaurants is built on the charming tale of a Georgian hostess. Known as Mama Manana, the story goes that she regularly greets guests at the doorstep of her home and warmly welcomes them inside with an abundance of kind-hearted hospitality. Tasked with designing the restaurant group’s latest outlet in Ukraine, local architecture and interiors firm Balbek Bureau, led by practice principal Slava Balbek, borrowed inspiration from this fable and harnessed its spirit of generosity in realising a contemporary restaurant setting.

Authorised by way of a foreword from the legendary filmmaker himself, Accidentally Wes Anderson is a pictorial journey of epic proportions: mind-boggling images of real-life architecture and adventures so on-brand with the Anderson aesthetic they could be outtakes.

Danish furniture house Fredericia has revealed a special edition of one of Denmark’s most celebrated design duos, ‘The Spanish Chair’ and its dining chair counterpart. The new release sees the timeless chairs reimagined in deep red saddle leather – a warming hue that echoes an earthiness which Danish-born designer Børge Mogensen sought to instil in all of his unpretentious designs.

Scheduled to open its box office to audiences later this year, the captivating Guangzhou Show Theatre is currently under construction in the Huadu District of Guangzhou, north of Macao in southern China. Introductory illustrations of the theatre’s imposing facade demonstrate how London-based firm Steven Chilton Architects has engineered the building to express the mesmerising fluidity and drape of a luxurious silk scarf, a garment which has well-established connections with the region’s past.

For the second consecutive year, renowned interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch worked on the retail space for Villa Noailles, an arts centre in the provincial commune of Hyères. Located on the French Riviera, it's a region the Nice-born designer knows well.

“I am fortunate to have a great and friendly working relationship with Jean-Pierre Blanc, founder of the Hyères International Fashion and Photography Festival, the Hyères Design Parade (dedicated to design) and the Toulon Design Parade (dedicated to interior architecture),” says Pierre.

The second of three spaces created by architects Patrick Kennedy and Rachel Nolan for Australian company Laminex seeks to challenge typical commercial office design. Titled ‘Workplace’, Kennedy Nolan’s eye-catching prototype showcases a curated mix of solid colours and natural textures alongside the firm’s uniquely sculptural approach to form-making. The workspace possesses two other qualities essential for a fit-out of its kind – a high level of durability and ease of maintenance, all made possible by the inherent qualities of laminate.
